About Us

Patiala Fashions is a specialty South Asian clothing boutique based in Surrey, Canada (Payal Business Centre), and was established in 2007. This brand was founded by Daljit Dharni and focuses on products related to Patiala culture. Patiala, a city located in Punjab, is famous for its Patiala “salwars,” “juttis,” “paghs,” and “parandhas.” Daljit founded this brand with the aim of empowering middle-aged Punjabi women to maintain their traditional roots. She began creating custom clothing that resembled her own closet. The grace, colorful patterns, conventional stitching styles, and hand embellishments of salwar kameez suits are what inspired the designs of Patiala Fashions attire.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, Rubina Dharni developed an interest in creating custom clothes for a younger clientele. She began designing her own clothes and sketching various designs, which eventually developed into her own clothing line, known as Phulkari by Patiala Fashions.

Phulkari by Patiala Fashions was established in 2018. Phulkari translates to “flower work,” traditionally made with threadwork. Phulkari shawls are a popular tradition in Punjabi culture. In Punjab, mothers used to stitch Phulkari shawls when they gave birth to daughters, and would gift them to their daughters at the time of marriage. It was a fitting name for the clothing line, as the inspiration behind the idea was seen as a gift from mother to daughter.

Phulkari pieces remain deeply rooted in Punjabi culture but incorporate a touch of Western flair. Customization is key to this clothing line. Rubina wanted to empower the younger clientele to create beautiful pieces while staying connected to their traditions and Punjabi culture. She uses the phrase “Come Design With Us” to encourage young women to express their creativity and personal style.

Together, this mother-daughter duo is blessed to share their designs worldwide. Start the design process today to create your dream outfits!
